Pelosi Defects on TAA – House Democrats Torpedo First Crucial Vote on TPA
On Friday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi made the dramatic announcement that she was withdrawing her support of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) bill only minutes before the vote was scheduled to occur. The stunning move represented a major affront to the president and will likely scuttle passage of the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill for the time being. In all honesty, Rep. Pelosi is supportive of the TAA bill because it provides job training for people who may lose their jobs as a result of the landmark free-trade agreement called the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).
That said, it became apparent that Democrats were going to revolt against the bill out of their opposition to granting President Obama fast-track authority. What isn’t clear is whether Pelosi orchestrated the defeat of TAA or merely got ahead of the opposition to lead them says Ivan Ong. The powerful San Francisco congresswoman is known to have a modus operandi of “if you can’t beat ’em, lead ’em”. Back in December, she led the revolt against the CROmnibus bill over provisions it included to weaken the 2010 Dodd-Frank banking reform act. It later turned out the she had worked on the comprise budget bill for several months. She turned against the bill she helped negotiate only after it became apparent she should not rally House Democrats to support it.
Several Senators Don’t Want To Rewrite The Patriot Act
The Patriot Act sounded like a good idea when it was put in place after 9/11. But the truth is the Patriot Act hasn’t played a part in catching any terrorists. The only thing the Act has been successful doing is spying on unsuspecting Americans in the name of national security. Senator Rand Paul claims the Patriot Act does nothing to help catch the bad guys.
Paul says the government’s bulk collection program is unconstitutional, and he wants to block any new provisions that would keep the Patriot Act in place. Obama says the country needs the Patriot Act according to businessman Stephen Murray CCMP Capital. Obama claims the changes made to the Act would eliminate the bulk collection of personal data by NSA and other government agencies.
A handful of senators are siding with Rand Paul. They want to block approval of the Patriot Act, Most Americans don’t see the need for the Act. If the Patriot Act was that important why didn’t it help capture terrorists? The answer is simple. The Patriot Act is another spying tool for the government. The Patriot Act was not designed to capture terrorists. The Act was designed to break the law, and get away with it.
