The power of grassroots political organizations have become more and more evident over the last several years. It was only eight years ago that the Supreme Court made one of the most controversial decisions that it has ever made. This decision was a result of the court case which is known as Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commision. This court case was going over the regulations which at the time were in place in order to limit the political influence of corporations and economic elite or the American democratic system. As a result of the decision of the Supreme Court made during this court case these regulations were eliminated. In the time since this decision has been made one of the largest ever influxes of donations from corporations to political campaigns has been seen.
Many members of the American population and of the Democratic Party have expressed concerns that this large influx of donations from corporations and the economic elite will result in the corruption of our congressmen. While it is certainly true that donations from large political action committees, corporations, and billionaires have increased over the last several years, it is unknown yet to what extent corruption may have been affected by this increase. However, the grassroots political organization End Citizens United has been formed in an effort to overturn the 2010 Supreme Court decision.
End Citizens United is led by Tiffany Muller and Matt Burgess, both members of the Democratic political party who have significant political experience. The organization was first formed in 2015 and was able to take place in the election cycle of 2016. During the 2016 election cycle End Citizens United was able to generate $25 million with the political campaign contributions. Perhaps the most significant thing about these funds were that they were all generated through grassroots methods. In fact, the average donation size was mere $14.
The organization is now home to a membership base of around 3 million individuals making it one of the largest grassroots political action committees in the country. It is now time for the 2018 midterm elections and political action committee End Citizens United has promised to generate an additional $35 million for the political campaign contributions in an effort to support key members of the Democratic Party which of taken a public stance against accepting donations from corporations and billionaires. Their main goal for the 2018 election is to take seats of political power from the Big Money 20.
